The End(less) Plain

Few years ago, Tanzania proposed the construction of a “highway” across the northern part of its Serengeti National Park. As the Serengeti (which in Maasai language means “endless plain”) is a delicate ecosystem of immense value (and for that reason also a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the project was challenged, by local civil society, before the East African Court of Justice, which prevented Tanzania from carrying out the project. It seems, however, that the plan may be revitalized, threatening one of the most iconic and important protected areas on earth.

The project resulted in the publication of the chapter The “Serengeti Highway” Case and International Judicial Protection of the Environment in the book Liber amicorum Sergio Marchisio -Il diritto della comunità internazionale tra caratteristiche strutturali e tendenze innovative (Napoli, 2022)
